Over the years, Honda engines have been found literally everywhere. And on land, and in water, and in the air. The market currently hosts an average of 25 million Honda engines annually for various types of vehicles and machines.
Honda is the only company in the world whose products operate on land, in water and in the air. Motorcycle engines account for the largest share of the total number of engines on the market by Honda. On average, the company sells more than 15.1 million two-wheelers a year, equipped with its powertrains.
More than 4.5 million Honda vehicles are introduced to the market annually. In turn, Honda Power Products, a division that makes engines for industrial and municipal applications, is more than 5.6 million units per year. This group includes, among others, generators or systems used in garden machines. It is worth noting that in addition to internal combustion engines, Honda hybrid and electric engines, the company has been researching and designing Honda Jet engines, which have been used in civil aviation since 1986.
At present, the key challenge for Honda in the production of engines is the complete electrification of the vehicle range. The company is expected to equip all major car models in Europe with hybrid systems or electric motors by the end of 2022.
Honda’s history with hybrid engines began in 1999 when the first generation of the Honda Insight was launched. It had a petrol-electric hybrid system with an IMA system, which, together with a 1-liter VTEC engine, made the Insight the most fuel-efficient car of the 90s. At the same time, however, the car was ahead of its time and did not succeed in the market.
The latest Honda hybrids are marked with the letter e: HEV (where e: stands for electrification and HEV stands for electric hybrid technology). All Honda e: HEV models are equipped with the next generation i-MMD hybrid system. The system consists of two electric motors (drive and generator), a gasoline engine, a lithium-ion battery and a fixed gear ratio electronic variator, as well as a power flow control unit (PCU), which ensures the stable operation of the system by efficiently dissipating the generated heat and works in one of three modes – electric, hybrid or internal combustion engine, which can be quickly and smoothly changed depending on the driving situation.
Honda’s global power in the engine market is rooted in the values held by Honda Soichiro. From the very beginning of work on the engines, the founder of the company was guided by two goals: to facilitate human labor and the motto “First a man, then a machine.” These tasks were already completed during his first project. At a time when bicycles were the primary means of communication in Japan, he designed and built his first moped engine. This moment was a breakthrough due to the fact that then the history of the Honda brand began.
Soichiro’s next project was the first H-type universal drive, which was supplied to the Kyoritz LTD agricultural machinery plant. It was used in the construction of an agricultural sprayer. The second half of the 1940s was crucial for Honda’s development. After the defeat of the Japanese in World War II, food production became a priority, and for this reason around 5,000 H-powered Honda sprayers left the Kiorica plant every month.
