When to remove the gearbox

When there are signs of malfunction, it is necessary to remove the manual transmission in order to perform repair work. Such characteristic signs include:

The presence of increased noise,
problems with gear shifting, including unclear engagement or spontaneous disengagement,
appearance of oil leaks.
Sometimes the gearbox is disassembled to be able to replace the flywheel, engine wheel packing or clutch.

The automatic transmission is dismounted when the signs described above appear. However, the automatic transmission does not need to be removed to replace the flywheel or clutch, as these parts were not originally installed in this case.

The techniques for removing an automatic transmission and a manual transmission are basically identical. The main differences lie in the size of the devices, as well as in the presence of the automatic variety of the hydraulic system hoses, which are connected to the cooling radiators.

How to Remove a Transmission

Consider the removal of the gearbox can be considered on the example of a mechanical device. These works will require a set of wrenches, pliers and a screwdriver with a flat blade. It is recommended to perform the work on a pit or an elevator. The algorithm of action will be as follows:

Install the car so that you can perform further work.
Remove the battery.
Remove the air filter, its mounting parts and the battery shelf.
Remove the engine mudguards.
Be sure to drain the oil from the gearbox, if this device is planned to change.
Disconnect drives of front wheels from the gearbox.
Disconnect electrics – disconnect wires from speed sensor, reversing light switch etc.
Take aside the engine harness.
Disconnect hydraulic actuator in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
Remove the optional exhaust gas neutralizer. Otherwise the motor support cannot be installed.
Disconnect the cables, then remove the starter, but do not touch the wires of the device, and it itself is simply removed to the side so as not to interfere with further work.
At the last stage, disconnect the rear support of the power unit from the gearbox bracket. To do this, you need to remove the bolts.

If after that it is planned not just repair, and replacement of the box, then put a new device, selected in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer. All the described work is done in reverse order. At the last stage, the oil is poured.

What else you need to know about the removal of the gearbox

Since the box itself weighs quite a lot, one person may not be able to hold it. It is better to work with a helper.

Before installing the gearbox in its original place, it is recommended to lubricate the relevant parts, including the spline of the primary shaft, with a refractory grease. A small amount of grease should be applied. Also before completing the work and reinstalling the gearbox, it is necessary to check the condition of the clutch slave disc. Special tools are used for this purpose.
